Samundar - समुंदर Scarf
The Samundar scarf (dupatta) is hand block printed on a cotton silk mix fabric with carved woodblocks in Jaipur, India.
The art of block printing in India has not changed for hundreds of years and is a craft that is passed down though generations of printers who, with incredible accuracy and skill, are able to create the most intricate designs. Each layer of colour is carved in mirror image into a woodblock and these blocks are then used one at a time to apply the design onto the surface of the fabric which is stretched out along a long printing table. This level of handmade craftsmanship is something that we at Blocked by Clark love to see and wish to continue supporting.
Samundar is the Hindi word for sea or ocean and is a playful design featuring an imagined underwater circus. A hidden world where mermaids can play and explore undisturbed by the surface. The inspiration for this design is a trapeze move I learned in my very first circus class around 6 years ago called mermaid, which is featured in the repeat pattern. However, the seed for the design was planted only last year by a certain fishy tailed mermaid aerialist from across the pond. This design also features a fish scale motif border on the short edges with a touch of metallic gold for extra ‘mermaid tail bling’ and was exclusively developed for the traditional art of hand block printing.
The scarf is lightweight and is the perfect accessory for all weathers adding a splash of colour to any outfit.
Due to the handmade process variation in the colour and print work should be expected, so no two designs will ever be exactly the same making each piece unique!
