Samundar - समुंदर Throw / Blanket
The Samundar blanket (dohar) is hand block printed on 100% cotton with carved woodblocks in Jaipur, India.
The art of block printing in India has not changed for hundreds of years and is a craft that is passed down though generations of printers who, with incredible accuracy and skill, are able to create the most intricate designs. Each layer of colour is carved in mirror image into a woodblock and these blocks are then used one at a time to apply the design onto the surface of the fabric which is stretched out along a long printing table. This level of handmade craftsmanship is something that we at Blocked by Clark love to see and wish to continue supporting.
Samundar is the Hindi word for sea or ocean and is a playful design featuring an imagined underwater circus. A hidden world where mermaids can play and explore undisturbed by the surface. The inspiration for this design is a trapeze move I learned in my very first circus class around 6 years ago called mermaid, which is featured in the repeat pattern. However, the seed for the design was planted only last year by a certain fishy tailed mermaid aerialist from across the pond. The reverse of this blanket features a fish scale motif with a touch of metallic gold for extra ‘mermaid tail bling’. Samundar was exclusively developed for the traditional art of hand block printing.
This throw is printed with bold indigo stripes on the reverse with a block printed indigo cord piping finish making is a versatile home accessory.
The Samundar blanket is suitable for year round use. Filled with a cotton flannel layer for added weight but still light enough to use in summer. It works beautifully as a colourful throw or as a light cozy cover.
Due to the handmade process variation in the colour and print work should be expected, so no two designs will ever be exactly the same making each piece unique!
